Surrey Branch Report 2016

2015-2016 has seen a steep learning curve year for this reluctant President. Without the other experienced executive not much would have been accomplished. To them I owe a huge debt of gratitude, and also I acknowledge their selfless efforts on all our behalves. The Executive meet 6 times a year, for two hours, and each one wears several hats in order to serve the membership. We even had one meeting over a mimosa brunch at my home with Floyd’s cheesecake, since the STA meeting space was double booked.
As your President I attended the BCRTA Conference and AGM, the BCTF AGM, a BCTF workshop for teachers considering retirement, and a BCRTA Zone meeting. At these I had the pleasure of getting to know other Executive who also attended one or more of these. I cannot stress enough times how hard these Executive work on behalf of the membership.
We are now nearly 1000 in membership numbers, and we once again received recognition from the BCRTA with 2 bottles of champagne for the increase in our numbers. One of these bottles was given to guest speaker, and I won the other at a luncheon.
We have dramatically increased the number of members receiving only an electronic copy of our newsletter, The Chatter. Thank you to Floyd for the excellent publication.
We are exploring other agencies to handle the monies raised for scholarships. In the meantime, we will still be giving two $1000 scholarships this year.
We had several very well attended social events;
1 To Hell With the Bell Brunch in Delta
2 Luncheons in October, December, February, and May, at Hazelmere
3 A Night At The Races in Cloverdale.
The workshops organized for SRTA members and friends were also very successful and well attended. They were:
1 “Personal Planning” (Recommended documents such as Representation Agreements,
Powers of Attorney and Advance Directives which express your wishes regarding
personal care, certain financial matters and end of life care if you are no longer able to
speak for yourself.)
2 Wills and Estate Planning”. (Info. re: legal rules for preparing wills in B.C., the duties of an executor, legal terminology, and pitfalls to avoid.)
3 “Pickleball”
4 “Pensions and Pacific Blue Cross Update” (including tax tips for medical deductions)
5 The Indispensable Binder” (RE: Getting your documents, info. together (re: property, travel, medications, finances, will, power of attorney, representation agreement, and lots more) and compiling it all in a binder.)
If you enjoyed this past year of membership, then please step up and volunteer to serve in any small way you are able to; from a few minutes at one event to as much as you wish on the slate of Executive. Without more hands to help the few who are carrying the load are getting very tired.

Pummy Kaur, President SRTA
