Vancouver Executive 2016-17
The Vancouver Retired Teachers Association has 1375 members. We try to keep our members informed with our Tabloid newsletter, Tab Notes and various reminders.
There have been four Tabloids this year with themes for two of them. Downsizing and clearing clutter was one topic and Intergenerational Living was another.
The Tabloid is received in colour by email and in black and white by regular post. We continually strive to have our membership receive the Tabloid by email as it saves on mailing costs.
Our fairly large executive has met six times from July to June. We have organized four luncheons, three of them at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club and one at the Langara Golf Club.
Steve Bailey and Arnie Lambert spoke to us at the September luncheon and two real estate agents Ana Domingos and Demetra Dikeakos spoke at the February luncheon.
They gave us some pointers on getting ready to downsize.
This year we have supported four scholarships of $1000.00 each. Two are to students in the Education Faculties at Simon Fraser University and University of BC.Another scholarship is to a student in the UBC Faculty of Nursing studying gerontology. The remaining scholarship is to the Gerontology Department at Simon Fraser University.
I was privileged to attend the Awards Recognition Ceremony at the Harbour Centre Campus on January 11, 2016 to acknowledge this scholarship winner.
Two workshops were organized for the membership. In October Patrick Kazimbu from Namibia gave us a very informative update on the Namibian National Teachers Union.
Several members of the BCTF went to Namibia to help them set up their organization originally. Patrick’s talk was accompanied by a wonderful power point presentation.
The second workshop was a COSCO workshop on Aging and Memory.
At the end of May two members of the executive organized a walking tour of Chinatown. Our tour guide from “
The Tour Guys” had an extensive background in the history of Chinatown and made the walk most interesting.
Six members of the VRTA attended the BCRTA Annual General meeting at the end of September and two members attended the National Pensioners Federation Convention in Ottawa.
Four members attend the monthly meetings of COSCO. Quite a few members attended the BC Forum on HealthCare on September 28th. Poinsettias were delivered to our life members by volunteers.
Our AGM will be held at our June Luncheon and we would welcome anyone interested in joining the executive, joining our activity groups, or volunteering as needs arise.
Thanks to all the executive for an interesting and productive year.
