It is hard to believe that the Bulkley Valley Retired Teachers’ Association is going to be moving into its sixth year as a local Association.
It seems like yesterday when Skip came through from Terrace and met with some of the local retired teachers here to encourage us to form our own local. It was wonderful that we heeded his advice.
We continue to welcome retired members that have moved to this area from other areas of the Province.
We have new retirees in our District this year and are hopeful that they will join us as well.
Many of our members, over time, have left the North to move to other areas in the Province and still continue to remain active with our local group.
As repeated in this Report in the past, we are pleased that they have maintained this. It allows us to keep in touch and hear news about their new communities.
This also keeps them informed about people that they worked with for many years as they receive minutes from our local meetings and initiatives. We have even had them join us for lunch if they are in the area for a visit during a scheduled luncheon. This is always a bonus for all of us. We continued to meet four times a year and have enjoyed our luncheons and meetings at the Hudson Bay Lodge in Smithers. We will be venturing forth to a new location for the coming year. This past year saw us participating in a presentation by one of our local physiotherapists on “Mobility Issues for Maturing Adults” and we received researched information on the “Pros and Cons of Reverse Mortgages”.
Thank you to Kristi and Laurie at the Provincial Retired Teachers’ Office. They make our role more effective as executive for our local retired teachers’ association.
I would like to thank Gail Montgomery who was our northern representative from Prince George from 2014 - 2016 and to Steve Bailey and JoAnn Lauber, the provincial directors that assisted Gail.
Their due diligence in keeping us informed during 2014- 2015 and 2015 -2016 was much appreciated.
A special thank you to Margaret Sutton who was our northern regional representative prior to 2014; she looked after us with both skill and professionalism.
Respectfully submitted by: Elaine Thompson (President BVRTA)
