Each year at BCRTA’s annual conference, PostScript Magazine celebrates the contributions of our members with the PostScript Excellence Awards. We recently had a chance to interview our three recipients about their contributions, and share the good news of their win.
The 2025 PostScript Excellence Award Winners

GERALD SOON, BEST ARTICLE, for his article “The Paper Trail”, which uncovers how government policy hostile to Chinese immigrants and their families had an impact on his grandparents and parents. Gerald’s thoughtful article shows how his sense of being Canadian includes acknowledging the injustices of the past but also holding out hope for his own grandchildren and their peers. A retired teacher and principal himself, Gerald now visits classrooms to speak to students about this part of our history and his family’s story. Congratulations, Gerald, on this award!

JANEY HARPER, BEST TRAVEL ARTICLE, for her piece on traveling to South America’s Colombia. Janey’s lively article gives us an insight into the spirit of this emerging nation and its people. In this interview she gives us some thoughts on the best ways she finds to learn an additional language. Also impressive is her adventurous streak in cycling and hiking all sorts of terrain. Congratulations, Janey on your PostScript Excellence Award!

TOM SKINNER, BEST ART OR PHOTOGRAPHY, for his collection of photographs that celebrate autumn in British Columbia. Of particular interest in these photos is the wildlife that Tom captures in vivid colour. In this interview Tom amuses us with some stories of how photos came to be, and his surprise and delight at receiving this well-deserved award. Congratulations, Tom!
