The Abbotsford Retired Teachers’ Association continues with a great executive, lots of social events, some more thought provoking events, and some that are just plain fun. Some committee and executive members will be moving on and we will miss their expertise.Gloria Adam and Doreen Petersen have done an excellent job of planning our social events and I want to thank them for their contribution to our Association. At our February potluck Clare Brooks gave an excellent power point presentation about her experiences in Iceland. Many of us wore red and white as it was during the winter Olympics. We all enjoyed the excellent cuisine and visiting with our colleagues. In April those of us who turned out for the potting session at Tanglebank had a lot of fun planning and planting pots for our patios after instruction from Brenda Falk. Most of us enjoyed an excellent lunch at Brambles Bistro which is a very popular place to eat because of the ambience and excellent cuisine. The presenter for the Advanced Care Planning session in May was great at discussing end of life preparation. The topic is a difficult one but something we all need to prepare for at one point or another to make sure we have a voice in decisions about our own care when we are no longer able to make them for ourselves. The highlight of the year was the June “field trip” to the Steveston Cannery followed by lunch at the Charthouse Restaurant. The bus was full and a few others took their own transportation and met us there. The tour guide presented a very interesting history of the cannery and had some great stories to tell. Two of our members had parents who actually worked and lived there and they were able to make the horrible working conditions and sexism come alive for us. Thank you to Karen Hamilton for once again, organizing a very successful event. This year, Gloria and Doreen attended the event for retiring teachers which was held at Harrison Hot Springs in June, followed by dinner and dancing. They presented each retiree with information about our organization and encouraged them to join us. We also held our thank you luncheon for volunteers at Paliotti’s which was followed by our executive meeting.
Planning for 2014 - 2015 is in progress. Our September breakfast will take place at the White Spot. Look for further information in this newsletter. Karen is working on an October field trip to the Sea to Sky Gondola and Gloria and Doreen are planning the November potluck and the Christmas Luncheon. If you have been reading your Postscript you will be aware that there are many concerns around the lack of a Health Accord. We are hoping to have a speaker to inform you about this issue at our November potluck. Our executive was looking forward to having elections in May. It was very disappointing that not one person was nominated for any position. Unless some people come forward, the future of the organization is at risk as the present executive are all getting older. Wayne Anthony will be retiring as Treasurer this year and we are looking for someone who can take over this position. Wayne is willing to spend time with the new treasurer until he/she knows what is expected of them. Mike Phelps and his crew of phoners deserve a vote of thanks for their continuing updates to members without email . Marg Munro is retiring from the phone committee and so we need someone to step up and take her place Thank you Marg for helping us out. I think your contacts will miss hearing from you. Kudos also to Roy Daly for making sure email addresses are up to date so he can forward information about events to the membership. Our Sunshine Chair, Shannon Reidlinger needs some “sunshine” herself right now and she is in our thoughts during her recovery. Carol Anthony has been keeping our photo history up to date and Elisa keeps after those new retirees to join our Association. Charlotte George has retired from the executive and was presented with a gift certificate for Earl’s and a bouquet of flowers in appreciation for her many years of service to the Abbotsford Retired Teachers’.
